Compeer - Our Volunteers

Our volunteers are people that have the desire to make a change in someone's life. They range in age, background, and stage in their lives. Anyone can be a Compeer 'friend'; there are no restrictions in education and/or training.

Each volunteer will fill out an application packet. The purpose of the application is to better match each client with his/her new friend. Each volunteer will receive training from the Compeer staff as well as attending a brief meeting with their new friends therapist. Education and training on mental illness will be given to volunteers on an ongoing basis. Compeer staff members will always be available to answer questions and meetings will be established in order to check on the progress of the client.

Our Friends do many different activities with the clients. Some of the activities include: going for walks on the beach, playing cards, going to a movie, or simply enjoying time together a coffee shop.

Learn how to become a Compeer volunteer

"I've been involved with the Compeer Program even before it was called Compeer. It's been over 20 years that I've been a volunteer. There have been many people that have one year of experience, five years, even 10 years --- but my experience has been a long term one. I've had a total of three Compeer friends. My longest relationships is almost 17 years, and that's with my friend Millie. Millie has taught me a lot about myself, a lot about friendship, and a lot about what is really important in life."
